Our Curriculum at Oakfield Primary Academy

Intent

At Oakfield Primary Academy, we are passionate about delivering a broad and balanced curriculum which enriches the lives of all of our pupils and consistently prepares them for the next stage of their learning. No matter the child's starting point, we have high expectations to support all children in acquring essential knowledge and skills in all areas of the curriculum, which they will progress through sequentially throughout their time at Oakfield. 

Our intent is to deliver a curriculum which allows all children to thrive and prepare them for the next stage of their educational journey through exceptional learning opportunities and memorable experiences to raise aspirations and broaden knowledge. It fosters a love of reading and develops a rich and varied vocabulary.

Implementation

At Oakfield Primary Academy, we believe that strong oracy skills in alignment with effective reading skills are fundamental to our children's success. Reading is at the heart of our curriculum and is a priority to extend and deepen pupils understanding and vocabulary. We believe that if our children are fluent readers, it will provide them with the foundations to be successful in all areas of the curriculum. Our children develop their reading skills in all subjects to support their acquistion of knowledge. They have dedicated reading lessons to hone in on specific learning which promotes progress. We foster a love of reading and encourage all children to read for pleasure and use reading to lead their own learning.

Vocabulary is given high profile at Oakfield. Through a vocabulary rich environment, children are encouraged to develop their vocabulary choices which allows them to develop key concepts across the curriculum and consolidate their learning. One of our fundamental objectives is to support all children in speaking clearly and to be able to articulate their learning using subject specific vocabulary. 

We teach a broad and balanced curriculum which follows the National Curriculum. Each subject is taught in its individual discipline and focuses on key knowledge which children acquire sequentially. This sequential approach facilitates progress, equipping pupils with the necessary knowledge for ongoing learning. Where possible, we make links between different subjects which allows our children to make connections between their learning. 

At Oakfield, it is imperative that we prioritise experiential learning for all children by providing real life experiences or educational visits. These memorable experiences allow all children to cement their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum as well as raising aspirations for all, which is key to enriching the personal development of every pupil.

Throughout our curriculum, children are faced with appropriate challenges which allows them to showcase our school values such as resilience and responsibilty. Allowing our children to problem solve and reason encourages emotional regulation in an age-appropriate way which is vital to ensure our pupil's success for life beyond school. Tackling ambitious challenges, whether successful or not, are celebrated throughout school.

Impact

The impact of our curriculum is demonstrated through the confidence, independence and resilience of our children. They are able to form meaningful relationships based upon mutual respect, recognising and celebrating differences within the school community and the wider world. The impact can be measured through the achievement and progress of our pupils from their individual starting points. Our children deepen their knowledge and skills over time and leave Oakfield well prepared for the next stage of their education.
