History

History is all around us and it is why we hold it in such high regard at Oakfield Primary Academy. Our intent is that our children will recieve a high-quality history education which will help them to gain coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world.

We aim to inspire pupils' curiosity to know more about the past and through finding out about how and why the world, our country, culture and local community have developed over time so that children understand how the past influences the present. It is our aim for our history curriculum to be broad, balanced, exciting, diverse and ambitious for all learners.

In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning, our history curriculum is implemented sequentially from EYFS to Year 6 to ensure that historical knowledge, concepts, vocabulary and disciplinary skills are built year upon year. Teachers use the long term history overview, history knowledge and skills progression map and end points of learning to support them in appropriately challenging children and teaching knowledge and skills systematically whilst building upon prior learning.

At Oakfield Primary Academy, history is taught discretley across three half terms a year to ensure it is not diluted through topics. We aim to provide opportunities for historical enquiry such as observing and examining evidence and exploring how evidence is used by providing enrichment opportunities. Additionally, our celebration days, for instance International Women's Day or Black History Month, ensure appropriate diversity in significant figures that children learn about.
